NEW RESEARCH .... OLD PHENOMENA

Exploring young people’s territorial behaviour in British Cities

Tuesday 9th December
10.30am to 1pm

Meadowbank Sports Stadium, 139 London Road, Edinburgh EH7 6AE

EYWC’s programme of regular youth work related seminars continues with an exploration of territorialism and young people’s relationship to it.

The issue of young people and their ‘territories’ is not a new concern for youth workers nor local communities. From the mod and rockers on Brighton beach through to the inter area rivalries that spark periodic clashes, young people attachment to ‘gangs’ has a cultural resonance going back many decades.

The most recent research exploring some of the issues that lie behind it have appeared in a report undertaken by the University of Glasgow and funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation entitled ‘Young People and Territoriality in Britain’ which was published in October 2008.

Keith Kintrea, Senior Lecturer in Urban Studies at the University of Glasgow and one of the authors, will be presenting key aspects of the research findings along with insights to local youth work that has been addressing this issue. This includes work being undertaken by Granton Youth Centre.

The Seminar is open to youth workers (volunteers, sessional and full time) and youth work agencies and is free.

Copies of the research briefings will also be available for those attending.

EYWC would wish to acknowledge the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and University of Glasgow for supporting the Seminar.

Bookings can be made by phone on 0131 667 1828 or by email eywc@layc.org.uk and places will be reserved on a first come first served bases.
