ABOUT EDINBURGH YOUTH WORK CONSORTIUM
The Consortium is a forum through which all youth work providers and policy makers can support youth work in the city.
It was established with an independent Chair in order to secure credibility with both the voluntary and statutory sectors.
In particular the Consortium seeks to:-
- Promote, encourage, support and develop quality youth work;
- Sustain and extend youth work provision in local communities;
- Share youth work issues, concern and practice;
- Monitor funding streams and alert practitioners of funding opportunities;
- Scrutinise and influence youth work related policies and planning decisions at community, city and national levels.
The Consortium is an alliance of all the youth work providers in the City of Edinburgh. It relies on the goodwill of its partners for the effectiveness of its operation.
Membership of the Consortium reflects the range and diversity of youth work provision in the city. It includes:
- City of Edinburgh Council service departments
- The full range of voluntary sector interests from uniformed organisations to faith based providers
- City-wide organisations such as Edinburgh Leisure
- Edinburgh Youth Council.
Our strategy
Youth work plays a critical role in the lives of thousands of young people across the city. It is estimated that one in four young people between the ages of 5 and 25 years experience the benefits of youth work, according to ‘Mapping the youth work sector in Scotland’ (YouthLink Scotland 2003).
The Consortium is committed to ensuring that youth work fulfils its role to the fullest by:
- Developing the youth work workforce
- Sharing and replicating good youth work practice
- Providing up-to-date information
- Promoting young people’s involvement in policy and planning structures
Our work
Over the coming year, the Consortium is committed to a programme of work that will contribute significantly to improving youth work in Edinburgh.
These are:
- To develop a youth work strategy for the city which reflects the needs and aspirations of all partners and that supports the national strategy.
- To hold a further two youth worker seminars on relevant topics targeted at youth workers – full time, sessional and voluntary.
- To organise a major youth worker consultation around the youth work strategy for the city , bringing practitioners, policy makers and participants of youth work together to consult, challenge and change how youth work develops in Edinburgh.
- To continue our representational and lobbying roles at local and national levels.
- To continue to meet as a Consortium and provide a unique forum for statutory, voluntary, and other agencies to share, debate and identify common issues that can be addressed.
- To develop our communication strategy including web provision and email accounts
